About Little Rock, Arkansas


Located in Central Arkansas on the Arkansas River, along the Interstate 40 corridor, Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas, the seat of Pulaski County, and the largest city in the state. The Little Rock metro area is home to close to 1,000,000 people.



Hernando de Soto's Spanish expedition passed through the area in 1541 and noted large earthen mounds built by Native Americans yars before. Little Rock (La Petite Roche) was named by French explorer and trader Jean-Baptiste Benard de la Harpe in 1722 for the small stone outcropping along the banks of the Arkansas River used by early river travelers as a landmark.
